The Ruby T. Green Scholarship was initiated in honor of Sister Ruby Thompson Green in commemoration of her 100th year birthday celebration.  Sister Green was born June 5, 1916, in Ahoskie, North Carolina to Joseph and Ruth Thompson. She grew up in Wayne, Pennsylvania, where she joined Second Baptist Church at age twelve, and graduated high school.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University, Hampton, Virginia, and did further study at Atlanta University in Georgia, and the University of Southern Mississippi. She taught school at Fort Valley, Georgia, Statesboro, Georgia and Delray Beach, Florida.

After arriving on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Sister Green invested many years educating youth via her successful pre-school and was the first African American instructor in the Biloxi Public School System, retiring in 1968.  Sister Green joined New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr.  Edward Humes Potter where she faithfully served as Sunday School Superintendent, Director of Vacation Bible School, President of the Senior Mission and in various other capacities until the Lord called her from labor to reward at 103 years of age.
